Matt Trenka

Matt proudly served the Westminster Police Department (CO) for 28 years, retiring as a Professional Services Section (PSS) Sergeant in May 2023. As a PSS Sergeant, Matt conducted internal affairs investigations as well as coordinated hiring throughout the department to include conducting background investigations. After retiring from Westminster, Matt joined the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office, where he currently serves as the Personnel and Training Sergeant, conducting internal affairs investigations, managing the Training Unit and assisting in hiring as one of the sworn personnel Hiring Managers.

Matt held many positions throughout his career from Patrol Officer to SCAT (Special Crime Attack Team), SWAT, Peer Support as well as a Professional Standards Investigator, and Detective prior to his promotion to Sergeant. Matt’s instructor experience includes being a Field Training Instructor, Defensive Tactics/Arrest Control Instructor, Taser Instructor, Critical Incident Training Instructor and Officer Survival Instructor. Matt taught at several regional Colorado POST academies in the disciplines of Officer Survival and Internal Affairs. Matt is the recipient of the Medal of Valor, 3 Distinguished Service medals and a Distinguished Unit Citation medal.

Matt was certified through PATC as a certified Internal Affairs Investigator and certified in Computer Voice Stress Analysis through NITV. Matt has attended numerous trainings and obtained certifications through such organizations as Leadership in Police Organizations, CSOC/CACP Supervisory Institute and Supervision of Police Personnel through the Northwestern University Center for Public Safety. Matt earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration from the University of Montana in 1991.
